Choosing your tail is often like choosing from a box of chocolates. Sometimes there is one that stands out and you know what you want. But often you only have a vague idea. Maybe you know the color and maybe you know the shape. What follows is a very brief idea of how I suggest merfolk decide on their tail.
What are you looking for in a tail?
For me I look at two things which are equally important-what are your favorite colors and who is your merperson? Is your mermaid fancy/pretty? Ariel with her bright colors falls under this as does my pink mermaid. They are bright, fun, decorative.
Or is your mermaid more "realistic"?
My second tail which I am designing now and hope to be able afford someday is like that. She is a barbaric princess who needs to be camouflaged so she can both hide and hunt. Something like this mermaid below...
Let your imagination go designing your tail. Be sure to pick what you will love. ;-D
Who are you?
My name is Sarah Elswick. I'm 22. I love mermaids, making costumes, painting, animals and landscaping.
Where do you live?
I live in Clovis, New Mexico.
How long have you been making tails?
I made first tail in 2008.
Why do you make tails?
I know what it's like to desperately want a tail so I decided to offer my tail making skills to others
How customizable can you make my tail?
I can do a lot of things. The first and easiest thing is that you have a huge choice of fabric, and we will search until we find the perfect one. Also, I can make your tail two colors (tail one color, fin another) for $10 extra. Such as this...
Other custom things such as dorsal, pectoral, or side fins and decorative waist fins, such as Arial's, all cost extra.
Making stripes or patches will cost up to twice as much because, again, it depends on how much fabric I have to order.
The thing I CANNOT do is certain changes to the fin. I can not make it wider. And it must fit over the monofin. I DO NOT cut the monofin. I can make it longer. I can make it different shapes. Below is an illustration of why I cannot make your tail wider. In the water everything outside the red lines will fold and be pulled back when you swim and will have no shape to it. The red tail shape is my recommended shape and size for your fin. This is what my pink tail is.
(Not to scale)
Why can't you make my tail NOW?
I take on only ten tails at a time so if I am totally booked you will have to wait. However, I will get to you as soon as possible :-)
How much does a tail cost?
Each tail I make is a custom tail so each tail varies in cost. As a general rule a basic tail costs somewhere around $140.
That's way too expensive! Why are you charging so much?
If you think this price is expensive then let me break down the basic price:
Monofin: $70 + $15 shipping
Fabric: Unless you are very, very short a tail takes 3 yards. The kind of fabric I use is generally $15 a yard plus $12 shipping.
For every tail I shop around for the best deals. If I can find things on sale you get a better price!
How do I make payments to you for my tail?
After we agree on a price you pay half down so I can order the materials for your tail. When I'm finished making your tail I will send you a picture of it and you pay the second half plus shipping. I'll then ship your tail quickly!
Do you take checks?
I have had a check lost in the mail so I ONLY take paypal.
Why don't you make free tails?
Lol, because I'm poor too!
Do you sell mermaid tops, hip scarves or other accessories?
Yes. Just tell me what you want and I will try and find or make it for you.
